Dissemination of Best Practices to Promote Smoke Free Homes ConferenceConference Series OverviewThe Dissemination of Best Practices to Promote Smoke Free Homes Conference series is joint venture of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Julius B. Richmond Center of Excellence, the Smoke Free Homes Project, and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, and is supported by grants from the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute and the US Environmental Protection Agency. The series is an effort to train pediatricians and other child health clinicians as “Smoke Free Champions” using best practices in tobacco use control and secondhand tobacco smoke (SHS) exposure reduction. Pediatricians and other child health clinicians are the primary source of medical information for parents, and are uniquely positioned to counsel parents and families to prevent and reduce tobacco use and SHS exposure. Clinicians participating in this series become members of a growing “Smoke Free Champions” network of tobacco control experts. The goals of the Champions are to: 1) raise awareness of the harms of tobacco use and SHS exposure; 2) develop strategies to reduce tobacco use and SHS exposure in their practices and communities; 3) change clinical practice to improve counseling of families to reduce and eliminate tobacco and SHS exposure; and 4) promote public health policies that support these goals. At each conference, attendees are provided with training in brief, effective ways to counsel parents to make their homes and cars smoke free; in addition, they receive training as a “trainer” and are provided with the resources needed to achieve the goals of a “Smoke Free Champion”. For more information about the Dissemination of Best Practices conference series, please visit the AAP Julius B. Richmond Center Excellence web site at www.aap.org/RichmondCenter/.
